Woody Island Air Base

Woody Island, known as Yongxing Island in Chinese, serves as the primary administrative and military headquarters for China's presence in the Paracel Islands. Located in the northern sector of the South China Sea, the island is the seat of Sansha City, a prefecture-level division created by Beijing to govern its maritime claims, as well as an active garrison outpost. Over several decades, extensive land reclamation expanded the island's physical footprint to roughly 2.1 square kilometers, allowing for the construction of a 2,700-meter concrete runway. According to profiling data from the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), this airfield operates as a military-civilian co-use facility, supporting Chinese commercial flights alongside regular combat deployments.

Security analysts track Woody Island as a critical radar and air defense chokepoint. Reports published by Radio Free Asiaindicate that the base features dedicated, completed air-defense structures equipped with retractable roofs. These permanent installations house long-range HQ-9 surface-to-air missile batteries and YJ-62 anti-ship cruise missiles, extending Beijing's air defense umbrella south from the mainland. Additionally, the airfield supports quick reaction alert (QRA) operations, allowing PLA Air Force J-10 and J-11 fighter jets to routinely intercept foreign aircraft operating within the contested northern sector.

Sovereignty over Woody Island remains a highly contentious diplomatic issue, with Vietnam and Taiwan maintaining historical claims to the feature. Vietnam, which refers to the island as Dao Phu Lam, frequently protests Chinese naval exercises and administrative changes in the area, pointing to its own historical records. Despite these diplomatic disputes, Beijing's control remains firm, supported by a permanent civilian population of over one thousand residents, desalination plants, and advanced communications infrastructure. Analysts suggest that the administrative model developed on Woody Island serves as a blueprint for China's long-term integration and governance of artificial features in the Spratlys.
