201st Military Base

The base traces its lineage to the 201st Latvian Rifle Division, raised on August 3, 1941 in Gorokhovets from remnants of the 24th Territorial Rifle Corps. After decades as a motor rifle division stationed in Tajikistan through the Soviet collapse and the 1992–1997 Tajik civil war — where it fought Islamist insurgents and helped recapture Dushanbe — it was reorganized into its current form as the 201st Military Base in 2004, formalizing a permanent Russian presence that had existed under a 1993 agreement. It falls under the Central Military District, commanded either directly or through the 41st Army headquartered in Novosibirsk.

The garrison is split across two locations roughly 100 kilometers apart: the 92nd and 149th Motor Rifle Regiments are based in Dushanbe, while the 191st Motor Rifle Regiment sits in Bokhtar (formerly Kurgan-Tyube), closer to the Afghan frontier. A tank battalion was added in 2016, and the base also fields artillery, reconnaissance, air defense (including S-300PS batteries), and NBC (nuclear-biological-chemical) defense units. Roughly 7,000 Russian troops are stationed there. The legal basis for the deployment was extended by an October 2012 agreement that keeps Russia's presence in place until 2042.

Moscow frames the base as the key security guarantor for Tajikistan and the CSTO's southern flank, particularly against instability spilling over from Afghanistan. On December 15, 2025, a presidential decree granted the base the honorary “Guards” title, updating its formal designation to the 201st Guards Military Base. The base has also contributed personnel to Russia's war in Ukraine: in April 2022, Ukrainian forces reported destroying a tactical group drawn from the 201st's deployed contingent.
