3624th Air Base

Erebuni Airport (ICAO: UDYE) began military life in 1938, hosting the 4th Voroshilov Aviation Squadron of the Transcaucasian Military District. Russia's modern presence follows the March 16, 1995 treaty granting Moscow a 25-year military presence in Armenia; a follow-on agreement on September 27, 1996 formally established the air base, which joined the command structure of the Russian 102nd Military Base (headquartered in Gyumri) in May 1996. Administratively the 3624th falls under that same 102nd Military Base framework, even though the airfield itself sits roughly 120 kilometers away in Yerevan.

The base has flown MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters since 1998 and was, for years, the last operator of non-upgraded classic Fulcrums in the Russian Aerospace Forces, typically fielding around 16–18 aircraft under CIS integrated air-defense agreements. In April 2019, Russia's Defense Ministry announced plans to replace all eighteen MiG-29s with Su-30SM multirole fighters in two stages through 2021. A dedicated attack and transport helicopter squadron — Mi-24P gunships alongside Mi-8MT/MTV-5 transports — was added starting in 2014 to support Russian ground forces deployed in Armenia, alongside the aviation garrison at Kanaker in Yerevan's northeast.

Erebuni remains a dual-use field: Armenia's own air force and a local flying school also operate from the airport, even as it hosts Russia's combat squadrons. As with the 102nd Military Base in Gyumri, the future of the arrangement sits against the backdrop of cooling Russia-Armenia relations since 2023, though no public announcement has signaled a change to the air base's status.
