The UK's National Grid Electricity System Operator has published its annual performance report, confirming that the AI-driven grid balancing system co-developed with Google DeepMind has now operated without a single unplanned outage for 730 consecutive days.
The system, known as Grid Intelligence Platform or GIP, uses real-time data from 14 million smart meters, 680 weather monitoring stations, and direct feeds from all major generation assets to predict and manage supply-demand imbalances up to 36 hours in advance.
The AI's ability to integrate intermittent renewable sources has been particularly valuable. On days when wind generation surged unexpectedly, the system automatically curtailed fossil peaker plants and redirected surplus power to vehicle-to-grid charging networks, preventing costly curtailment.
The technology is now being licensed to grid operators in Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands, with the UK government collecting royalties that partially offset the original £340 million development investment.
