Istanbul's Earthquake Retrofit Programme Reaches Half the City's Pre-1999 Buildings Ahead of the Predicted 'Big One'
Istanbul has structurally reinforced 420,000 of its 840,000 pre-1999 buildings. That is the halfway point in a race against a fault system that geologists give a 64 percent chance of producing a magnitude 7.5 earthquake within thirty years. The programme is ahead of schedule. The fault does not care about schedules.
