UN High Seas Treaty Designates First Three International Marine Protected Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction

Two years after the landmark High Seas Treaty was ratified by the required 60 nations, the first three Marine Protected Areas in international waters have been formally designated — covering 2.1 million square kilometres of the South Atlantic, North Pacific, and Indian Ocean, and placing them beyond the reach of commercial fishing, seabed mining, and oil exploration.
