Two years after the landmark High Seas Treaty was ratified by the required 60 nations, the first three Marine Protected Areas in international waters have been formally designated — covering 2.1 million square kilometres of the South Atlantic, North Pacific, and Indian Ocean, and placing them beyond the reach of commercial fishing, seabed mining, and oil exploration.
