The fundamental vulnerability of missile-based air defence has always been economic: an interceptor missile costs orders of magnitude more than the rocket or mortar it destroys, making saturation attacks — firing cheap munitions in sufficient volume to exhaust interceptor magazines — a rational adversary strategy. Iron Dome's per-interception cost of $50,000, multiplied across thousands of engagements, has cost Israel billions and created a structural affordability problem that no incremental improvement to the system could resolve. Iron Beam changes the arithmetic entirely.

The 100-kilowatt solid-state laser system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with partial funding from the United States Missile Defense Agency, was declared operationally ready in January 2025 following an 18-month field testing programme in the Negev Desert. Test intercepts included 107mm rockets, 120mm mortar rounds, and commercial quadcopter drones modified to carry explosives — the threat profile most commonly encountered in conflicts with Hamas and Hezbollah.

Engagement range is classified, but defence analysts citing radar and optical tracking data estimate effective range at 7 to 10 kilometres — sufficient to defend fixed installations, forward operating bases, and urban areas from short-range rocket and drone attack. The system's magazine is effectively unlimited as long as electrical power is available; ground-based diesel generators can sustain continuous operation indefinitely.

The United States has committed to co-funding an exportable variant for NATO allies, with Germany and the United Kingdom identified as priority recipients. The Pentagon has separately accelerated its own high-energy laser programme, citing Iron Beam's operational performance as validation of a technology the US military has been developing in parallel for two decades.

"The cost per shot is almost irrelevant," said Brigadier General Yaniv Rotem of the Directorate of Defense Research and Development. "What matters is that they can fire ten thousand rockets and we can answer every one."
