Classical Indian music has always had a complexity problem with young audiences — not because the music lacks appeal, but because its apprenticeship structure, which traditionally required years of study before a student could perform publicly, created a barrier between curiosity and participation that popular music forms do not impose. The raga renaissance now underway has not solved this problem so much as routed around it.

The routing mechanism is streaming and short video. Platforms including YouTube and Instagram have produced a cohort of young Hindustani and Carnatic musicians — most between 18 and 30 — who post practice sessions, explanatory videos, and live improvisations to audiences in the millions. The content is pedagogically sophisticated and aesthetically serious; it is also filmed on phones in natural light and captioned in six languages. The combination has produced engagement numbers that concert promoters could not have imagined five years ago.

Sarod player Ananya Krishnamurti, 24, has 8.4 million followers across platforms and sells out 2,000-seat venues in cities where classical music previously drew audiences of a few hundred. Her approach — explaining the grammatical structure of each raga before performing it, then demonstrating its emotional range — has been credited by music educators with driving a measurable increase in conservatory applications.

The government's gurukul revival programme, which funds residential apprenticeships with master musicians for students who cannot access conservatory training, has enrolled 12,000 students in its second year — three times the initial projection.

"The music was never the problem," said veteran sitarist Pandit Rajan Srivastav. "The door was closed. These young people have simply learned to knock on it in a language the next generation understands."
