The Reykjanes Peninsula sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at approximately two centimetres per year. The geological consequence is one of the most geothermally active landscapes on Earth: a surface from which heat is essentially free, abundant, and inexhaustible on any human timescale. The economic consequence, in 2025, is that Iceland has become one of the most sought-after locations on the planet for the electricity-intensive business of large-scale artificial intelligence computation.

Microsoft, Google, and a consortium of sovereign wealth funds have collectively invested ISK 2.3 trillion (approximately €15 billion) in Icelandic data centre capacity since 2022. The facilities — several of which use geothermal hot water directly for server cooling, eliminating the refrigeration systems that represent 30–40 percent of energy consumption in conventional data centres — operate with a Power Usage Effectiveness ratio below 1.05, compared to an industry average of 1.55.

The carbon mathematics are, by the standards of the technology sector, remarkable: a single large-scale AI training run that would generate 550 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in a gas-powered US facility generates effectively zero in Iceland. For operators facing regulatory pressure and voluntary net-zero commitments, the location decision is increasingly straightforward.

Iceland's government has moved to manage the consequent land and infrastructure pressure — new data centre licences are now subject to environmental impact assessments and local authority consultation requirements that did not exist in 2020 — while negotiating revenue-sharing arrangements that direct 12 percent of data centre electricity revenues into a national infrastructure fund.

"We have always exported energy," said Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson. "We have simply learned to export it in a more valuable form."
