Physicists have been searching for direct evidence of dark matter since Fritz Zwicky inferred its existence from galaxy cluster rotation rates in 1933. Nearly a century of increasingly sensitive experiments — deep underground detectors, space-based observatories, particle colliders — returned null results or contested anomalies. The FASER2 detector's data, published simultaneously in Nature Physics and presented at a special CERN colloquium, changes that record.

The Forward Search Experiment 2, installed in a tunnel adjacent to the Large Hadron Collider's ATLAS detector in 2023, is designed to capture particles with very small interaction cross-sections that travel in the forward direction from collision points — a region previous experiments largely ignored. Over eighteen months of LHC Run 4 data collection, FASER2 recorded 23 events consistent with the predicted signature of a dark photon — a hypothetical mediator particle between ordinary matter and the dark sector — at a statistical significance of 6.2 sigma, well above the 5-sigma threshold conventionally required to claim discovery.

The dark photon has a theoretical mass consistent with a "light dark matter" model that had been gaining theoretical favour but lacked experimental support. If confirmed by independent replication — the collaboration has shared its full dataset with competing detector teams at Fermilab and the planned FCC-ee facility — the finding would represent the first extension of the Standard Model by experimental discovery in twenty years.

Cosmological implications are already being debated: a dark photon of the observed mass range would interact weakly with hydrogen, raising questions about whether dark matter plays a role in stellar formation dynamics that current models do not capture.

"We have been staring at 27 percent of the universe's mass content and seeing nothing," said FASER2 spokesperson Dr. Milena Vásquez. "We are finally seeing something."
